Culture

About 30 minutes away lies the Abbey of Montecassino, founded in the 5th century and rebuilt after its destruction during World War II. An imposing symbol of resilience and faith.

Just 15 minutes away, Arpino, an ancient Roman town dating back to the 7th century BC, is the birthplace of Cicero and Gaius Marius, and still preserves remarkable sites such as the Ciceronian Tower and Ladislao Castle.

Atina

Nearby, Isola del Liri stands out for its dramatic waterfalls in the town centre.

All around, authentic hilltop villages, quiet piazzas and charming churches reflect the area’s slow rhythm of life.

In summer, from July to August, local festivals bring each town to life with music, traditional food and a vibrant atmosphere.

Flavours

A journey through the Comino Valley is a feast for the senses, where every dish tells a story of tradition and passion. Local producers and family-run trattorias in San Donato, Atina, Casalvieri, Alvito and Picinisco create dishes that honour centuries-old recipes, showcasing exceptional cheeses such as Pecorino di Picinisco DOP, artisan breads and farm-reared meats.

From rustic recipes like panna cotta to the renowned Cannellini di Atina DOP and the foraged mountain greens known as orapi, the cuisine celebrates simplicity, authenticity and connection to the land. Whether you’re tasting homemade pasta, sampling local olive oil, or joining a food festival, the Comino Valley offers an unforgettable taste of authentic Italy: genuine, generous and delicious. We can recommend the best places for a true feast or even organise local producers to come directly to the B&B for larger groups, complete with fresh truffles, creamy cheeses, slow-cooked meats and, of course, excellent local wine.

Nature

Opportunities abound, if you’re lucky, to spot some of the area’s exciting fauna.

Marsican bears are known to live in the surrounding mountains and have even been spotted at night in San Donato. Wild boar and porcupines are regularly spotted in busier spots, whilst the bird life is riotous.

In the mountains, local shepherds still live with their flocks of sheep, goats and Mediterranean buffalo (which produce truly outstanding mozzarella) during the summer months.

If you’re looking for a perfect picnic spot on your excursion, make sure you take some delicious local food from the markets with you.

In 2017, the 600-year-old beech forests in Abruzzo were recognised as a world heritage site. With prior notice, we can arrange guides for walking and foraging for truffles.
